Southern Fried Dogs

February 1, 2008

Southern Fried Dogs AAAHH!! Yes, here it is! One of my all time favorites! Fried hot dogs…sausages for you lowly people out there! Jus’ Kiddin’!
Anyways, these are SUPER easy and fantastically tasty! But be warned, you would have to use a considerable amount of oil for the deep-frying….
This makes for an excellent party finger-food…served with coleslaw or a simple Indian chutney.

Ingredients:
1) 6 long chicken hot dogs or sausages (you could also use pork…tastes delicious)
2) Half a cup of flour
3) 1 egg
4) 1 teaspoon salt – not heaped (but use salt only if the sausages are not salted…usually the packeted, processed ones are…so be careful with this)
5) half a teaspoon of oregano seasoning
6) half a teaspoon of red chili powder – depends on how hot you like it

Now Fry ‘em!
Mix the flour, salt (if you’re using any), chili powder and oregano and spread it out evenly on a shallow dish. Beat the egg and pour it into a shallow dish. Cut up each sausage into half. Pour about a cup of oil in a skillet and heat it on high. To check whether the oil is hot enough, put a pink of flour in it, and if it sizzles immediately with bubbles coming out at the edges , then voila, your oil is super hot and ready to cook in. Lower the heat to medium.
Roll each piece of sausage in the egg dish and the roll it in the flour mixture. Coat well. Deep fry it in the oil till its brown all over…as crisp as you like! (Check the snap for help) Make sure they don’t stick to the bottom of the skillet…its not such a pretty thing.

Tip:
Try putting together a simple sidey salad. Grate cabbage, cucumber, carrots and chop tomatoes. Sprinkle some salt, pepper and lemon juice all over and serve it with the dogs. And if you’re feeling lazy, then tomato ketchup or Mom’s pudina ki chutney is always there to save the day!!!
Hmmm….maybe, I should put up a good pudina chutney recipe…..I’ll have to call Ma now….
